Partisan double standards exposed in redistricting fight

Judge Dianna GibsonJudge Dianna Gibson issued a 79-page ruling on Aug. 25, 2025, declaring Utah's Legislature 'unconstitutionally repealed Proposition 4.' The ruling requires new boundaries by Sep. 24 that comply with voter-approved anti-gerrymandering standards.

Trump responded Aug. 27 by calling Utah's ruling 'absolutely Unconstitutional' while pushing Texas Republicans to create five new GOP districts. His contradictory positions expose partisan calculation: constitutional redistricting when helping Republicans, judicial activism when helping Democrats.

Utah voters approved the Better Boundaries initiative 50.3% to 49.7% in Nov. 2018, creating an independent redistricting commission with anti-gerrymandering standards. The Republican supermajority Legislature gutted the measure in 2020, making the commission advisory only.

Current Utah maps let Republicans win 100% of congressional delegation with approximately 65% of statewide vote share. Democrats receive zero representation despite consistent 35% support across the state.

Trump's Texas redistricting effort aims to flip five Democratic seats to Republican control through mid-decade map manipulation. This breaks the traditional once-per-decade redistricting cycle tied to census data.

California Democrats responded with a counter-gerrymandering proposal potentially creating five new Democratic seats. This escalated a nationwide redistricting arms race ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Trump attacked Utah's 'Radical Left Judges' and demanded the GOP 'STAY UNITED' to keep 'four terrific Republican Congressmen.' He praised Texas efforts to create Republican advantages through map manipulation.

Senator Mike Lee echoed Trump's position, arguing 'Legislative districts are supposed to be drawn by state legislatures, not unelected independent commissions designed to give Democrats an edge.' This opposes voter-approved reforms.

Utah's Supreme Court ruled on Jul. 11, 2024, that the Legislature exceeded its authority by significantly altering the independent redistricting commission structure. The justices found lawmakers 'impaired the core redistricting reform enacted under Proposition 4.'

Rep. Blake MooreBlake Moore became the first House GOP leadership member to contradict Trump's redistricting wishes. He opposed Texas mid-decade gerrymandering while predicting Illinois would retaliate 'worse, in favor of the Democrats.'
