Nevada judge blocks ICE from locking up all deportation cases without bond hearings
On March 31, 2026, U.S. District Judge Richard Boulware II ruled against a Trump administration policy that required ICE to detain nearly everyone facing deportation in Nevada — even long-term residents with no criminal record. The ruling in Jacobo-Ramirez v. Noem (Case No. 2:25-cv-02136) found the Department of Homeland Security policy violated federal law and the Fourth Amendment and caused "irreparable harm." The ACLU of Nevada and UNLV Immigration Clinic filed the class-action lawsuit in October 2025. The ruling restores bond hearing rights for a defined class: non-citizens who entered without inspection, are in removal proceedings, and have no prior removal orders. Up to 60 people per week in Nevada are expected to seek bond hearings. More than 100 judges nationwide had already ruled against similar mandatory detention policies.

North Carolina Supreme Court ends 32-year school funding case in 4-3 ruling
On April 2, 2026, the North Carolina Supreme Court ended the 32-year-old Leandro school funding case in a 4-3 decision. Chief Justice Paul Newby wrote the majority opinion — joined by two other Republican justices — holding that the trial court lacked subject matter jurisdiction and dismissing the entire case with prejudice. All court orders after July 24, 2017 were declared void ab initio, including the court's own 2022 ruling ordering the state to fund a multi-billion-dollar education improvement plan. Republican Justice Richard Dietz dissented alongside Democratic Justices Anita Earls and Riggs. The ruling voided a $677.8 million spending order tied to a comprehensive remedial plan that could have eventually required more than $5 billion in new education spending. The case, originally filed in 1994 in five counties, had established in 1997 that the North Carolina Constitution guarantees every student a right to a "sound, basic education." The court dismissed with prejudice — meaning the case cannot be refiled.

Trump fires Pam Bondi and installs his former defense attorney as acting AG
On April 2, 2026, President Trump announced via Truth Social that he was removing Pam Bondi as U.S. Attorney General. Trump said Bondi would "transition to a much needed and important new job in the private sector." Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche — Trump's former personal defense attorney in the Manhattan DA and Jack Smith cases, confirmed as DAG in March 2025 — was named acting attorney general. Sources told CNN and CBS that Trump was frustrated with Bondi over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and her failure to pursue prosecutions of his perceived political enemies. Lee Zeldin, the EPA administrator, emerged as the likely permanent replacement. The firing made Bondi the second Cabinet secretary removed in recent weeks, following Kristi Noem's exit from DHS.

VA killed its veterans mortgage rescue program — and 10,000 vets lost their homes
On May 1, 2025, the Trump administration shut down the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program with just one week's notice to mortgage servicers and VA staff. VASP had given more than 33,000 veterans new, low-cost mortgages at 2.5% interest to avoid foreclosure. The VA said the program "lacked congressional authority" and wasn't core to its mission. Within months, more than 10,000 veterans lost their homes — the highest foreclosure pace for VA-backed loans in a decade. Another 90,000 veterans are currently behind on their mortgages. Congress passed a replacement law in July 2025, but the partial-claim program it authorized still isn't fully operational.
