Historic Article 4 consultation triggered as 19 drones violate airspace

Poland formally invoked NATO Article 4 on 10 Sep. 2025 after 19 aerial objects breached its airspace between 23:30 on 9 Sept and 06:30 on 10 Sept.

Allied and Polish assets, including Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS support and German Patriot systems, participated. Up to four drones were confirmed destroyed with NATO assistance.

NATO Secretary General Mark RutteMark Rutte said allies 'expressed solidarity' and denounced Russia's 'reckless behaviour' during Article 4 consultations.

Polish officials recovered drone debris across eastern and central Poland, and temporary flight suspensions affected Warsaw Chopin, Modlin, Rzeszów-Jasionka and Lublin airports.

Article 4 triggers consultations among allies, not an automatic collective military response under Article 5; the 2025 invocation followed seven prior invocations since 1949, making this the eighth.
