Ex-president gets 27 years for Jan 8 attack, coup plot

The Supreme Federal Court (STF) convicted Jair Bolsonaro on Sept. 11, 2025 and sentenced him to 27 years and three months in prison.

The panel vote was 4–1, with Justice Luiz Fux dissenting on the five-count verdict.

The formal counts were: armed criminal organization; attempted violent abolition of the State Democratic Order; attempted coup; qualified damage to federal property; and deterioration of federally listed heritage.

Prosecutors presented evidence cited as including an internal document nicknamed 'Operation Green and Yellow Dagger', which they say contained plans tied to the plot.

Bolsonaro remains under house arrest in Brasília and has stated he will appeal the conviction.

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) disqualified Bolsonaro from holding public office until 2030 on Jun. 30, 2023, a separate ruling that predates the 2025 STF conviction.
