Alliance fractures as Trump threatens military withdrawals

On 2025-03-07 in Brussels, President Trump warned NATO allies of a “security downgrade” unless they raise defense spending to 4 % of GDP—double the 2 % pledge agreed at Wales in 2014 (White House press pool; NATO communique).

According to NATO’s 2024 annual report, 14 of the alliance’s 32 members met the 2 % of GDP defense-spending target before the Mar. 2025 ultimatum (NATO 2024 report).

Poland already allocates over 3 % of its GDP to defense and publicly backed Trump’s increased spending requirement in Brussels (Reuters summit wrap).
