FBI Director Patel executes warrant on Fulton County election records
FBI agents executed a search warrant at the Fulton County Election Hub on Jan. 28, 2026, seizing 700 boxes of 2020 election materials. The search began in the morning and continued well past nightfall. Agents backed up lines of trucks to the warehouse to cart away ballots.
Director of National Intelligence
Tulsi Gabbard was present at the scene during the search. Sen.
Mark Warner called this unprecedented and asked why the DNI would show up at a federal raid tied to Trump obsession with losing the 2020 election. The DNI oversees U.S. intelligence agencies and typically does not participate in domestic law enforcement.
The warrant cited possible violations of two federal statutes. One requires election records to be retained for a certain amount of time. Another outlines criminal penalties for election officials who intimidate voters or knowingly procure false votes. Fulton County Commissioner Mo Ivory said this is Donald Trump obsession with losing the 2020 election.
FBI Director
Kash Patel said on The Charlie Kirk Show on Jan. 29 that a federal judge determined there was probable cause. He said these things take time and the FBI is going through truckloads of evidence. He said he cannot predict where the investigation will go.
Trump lost Georgia by 11,779 votes in 2020. Georgia officials audited and certified the results three times. At the World Economic Forum in Davos on Jan. 22, Trump said people will soon be prosecuted for what they did regarding the 2020 election.
The DOJ sued Fulton County Superior Court Clerk Che Alexander in December 2025, seeking access to 2020 election documents. Alexander filed a motion to dismiss the suit. The Georgia State Election Board passed a resolution in July 2025 seeking assistance from the U.S. Attorney General to access voting materials.
On Feb. 2, Fulton County filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging the legality of the warrant. Commissioner Marvin Arrington Jr. said the county wants forensic accounting, wants documents to stay in Georgia under seal, and wants to protect voter information.
